Game 8: Martin Van Buren vs. Super Bowl VIII
Did you know that the term "OK" traces to Martin Van Buren, our 8th President? His nickname was Old Kinderhook. He was born in Kinderhook, N.Y. So that mostly explains that. Van Buren was a politician. He appeased the Southern arm of the Democratic party by coming out for free trade and saying he wouldn't abolish slavery. He didn't want to upset anybody powerful. He wimped out in the Amistad case, sending a ship of captives to Cuba, so as not to anger Spain. He served just one term. OK!
Super Bowl VIII may have been an even bigger letdown than Van Buren. The Dolphins scored on the opening kickoff, and it was never close. They were up 17-zip at halftime and won 24-7. There wasn't a single passing TD in the game. Dolphins QB Bob Griese completed 6 passes total, for 63 yards. The MVP was run-up-the-gut fullback Larry Csonka. The halftime show featured Miss Texas 1973 playing a fiddle tribute to American music, titled "A Musical America." By the end, fans mush have been begging for Van Buren. MVB! MVB! MVB for MVP! And the Presidents build their early lead on the scoreboard.
Score after this match: Presidents 7, Super Bowls 1.
